Privacy Policy
This policy explains what happens to your data when you visit Brass & Border. It applies to brassandborder.com.
Who we are
Brass & Border is a personal website about interior design, home furnishings and garden design, run by Steve Binding, based in Surrey, United Kingdom. You can get in touch via the contact page.
For the purposes of UK GDPR, I am the data controller for this site.
Comments
When you leave a comment, I collect the information shown in the comment form, along with your IP address and browser user agent string. These last two help with spam detection.
An anonymised string created from your email address, known as a hash, may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you use it. Gravatar’s privacy policy is at automattic.com/privacy. Once your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible publicly alongside it.
Media
If you upload images to this site, please avoid images with embedded location data, known as EXIF GPS. Visitors can download images and extract that data.
Cookies
If you leave a comment, you can choose to save your name, email address and website in cookies. This saves you filling the form in again next time. These cookies last for one year.
If you visit the login page, a temporary cookie checks whether your browser accepts cookies. It holds no personal data and is deleted when you close your browser.
Logging in sets several cookies that store your login details and screen preferences. Login cookies last two days, screen option cookies last a year. Selecting “Remember Me” extends your login to two weeks. Logging out removes them.
Editing or publishing an article saves an additional cookie holding no personal data, simply the post ID of the article edited. It expires after one day.
Affiliate links and third party cookies
This site contains affiliate links. When you click one, the retailer or affiliate network may place a cookie on your device so any resulting purchase is attributed to this site. These cookies are set by the third party, not by me, and are governed by their own privacy policies.
I do not receive your personal information from these transactions. I can see aggregate figures such as the number of clicks and the number of resulting orders, but not who placed them or what else was in the basket.
The affiliate networks and retailers I work with are listed on the affiliate disclosure page, along with links to their privacy policies. You can decline these cookies through your browser settings. Doing so will not affect your ability to use this site.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles here may include embedded content such as videos, images or articles from elsewhere. Embedded content behaves exactly as though you had visited the other website directly.
Analytics
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that content, including tracking you if you have an account and are logged in to that site.
I use analytics software to understand how the site is used, including which pages are popular and roughly where visitors come from. This data is aggregated and is not used to identify individuals.
Who I share your data with
I do not sell your data or share it for marketing purposes. If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email. Comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
How long I keep your data
Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely, so follow up comments can be recognised and approved automatically rather than held in a moderation queue.
For anyone who registers on this site, the personal information provided in their user profile is stored. All users can see, edit or delete their personal information at any time, except their username. Site administrators can also see and edit that information.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to access the personal data I hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it erased, to restrict how it is processed, to object to processing, and to receive it in a portable format.
If you have an account here or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data held about you. You can also request that it be erased. This does not cover data I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal or security reasons.
To make any of these requests, please use the contact page.
If you are unhappy with how your data has been handled, you have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
Where your data is sent
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service, which may process data outside the United Kingdom.
